HAPPY 2010
I just met Tatiana de Rosnay, author of SARAH'S KEY the story of a young girl's survival from the children's roundup to the Vel' d'Hiv' in Nazi-occupied Paris, July 1942. Although simplistically written and a bit melodramatic for my taste, the story is very powerful. de Rosnay gave a very touching account of how this book has transformed her life and several in the audience had similar response. It was a very emotional morning. The book is being made into a movie.
Just heard the dynamic Harold Holzer, renowned Lincoln scholar (author, co-author,or editor of 33 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era) lecture on Lincoln and Obama: Lessons from the Past, Inspiration for the Future. One point of information I found incredibly ironic: Obama consciously chose Lincoln's bible for his swearing in. Lincoln did not have his own bible. It was borrowed from Chief Justice Roger B. Tanny who led the Supreme Court in supporting The Dred Scott Decision.
William Styron: A great book should leave you with many experiences and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it.
