THE ARTIST AS FICTION'S MUSE
(Art through the novelist's eyes) Currently a number of contemporary writers have focused on either the role of the artist as main character and/or found inspiration in the works of some of our most revered painters: Vermeer, Matisse, Van Gogh, Italian Masters, etc.

Discussion and reading from selected novels to explore the variety and creative use of art infused fiction.

TRAVEL BY THE BOOK
We know how books transport us to varied places; real and imagined.
There are a wealth of contemporary writings whose settings are so vividly described that they have actually caused an influx of tourism. Review a number of these "travel motivators." Resource list provided.

ACCENT ON LATINO WRITERS
Join in a discussion of contemporary Latin American novelists as we explore the movement away from "magic realism," political sensitivity and history to the new wave of writers as cultural hybrids. A variety of fiction from the works of Isabel Allende, Julia Alverez, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquivel, Carlos Fuentes, Christina Garcia and others will be sampled. Suggested reading list offered.

IN THE WORDS OF WOMEN
Enjoy a celebration of readings and an intriguing discussion of themes and ideas from the works of some of the late 20th century's best known and best loved authors. Selections will be made from Margaret Atwood, Gloria Naylor, Isabel Alllende, Amy Tan, Toni Morrison, Anne Tyler and others.

WOMEN WHO DARED
Learn of the lives and work of three very distinct women, Maya Angelou, Beryl Markham and Anzia Yezierska. Each rose above the limitations of their early background, ignored societal restrictions and went on to live extraordinary lives.

WOMEN HISTORY MAKERS
Review the Women's Movement through the eyes and writing of Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Susan Faludi, Naomi Wolf, Katha Pollitt, etc.

IMMIGRANT WRITING IN NEW YORK STATE
New York has always welcomed new voices and new visions from other shores. Join in an exploration and dramatic reading of a variety of immigrant writing from and about New York. Selections will be made from a vast variety of cultures, spanning the past century to our most recent voices.

RETROSPECTIVE ON PETE HAMILL
Join in conversation about the multitalented, charismatic author of Snow In August, Pete Hamill. We'll not only explore his fascinating life as journalist, artist, editor, author, we'll review and dramatically read from a number of his works. Selections may include Why Sinatra Matters, A Drinking Life, Diego Rivera and most recently, Forever.

RETROSPECTIVE on JOHN STEINBECK
Join in an exploration about the life and work of America's author. Recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, John Steinbeck's controversial and groundbreaking work received both high praise and sharp criticism.

AN EXPLORATION ON THE LIFE AND WORK OF WILLIAM STYRON
William Styron is one of the leading authors of his generation. His thought-provoking work is epic in sweep and depth. Grappling with some of the most harrowing events and unresolved moral questions of our time, his fiction combines a concern for history with a personal exploration of the fundamental needs of a healthy society.               Very recently we’ve seen an explosion of new books from international writers  bringing us greater insight into today’s global issues.   Attempting to bridge a cultural divide, these novels, memoirs and  non- fictions, present history on a more personal level.   Join with dynamic book group facilitator, Fran Cohen, in a discussion and reading of selected works from distant lands.  Reading list provided.

HOW TO READ A NOVEL

Currently a number of contemporary writers (Jane Smiley, Francine Prose, and others) have focused on varied ways of reading and looking at a novel.  Whether a book group participant or independent reader, explore how to make the most of your reading experience.
